Capture the Moment: The Modern Photographer’s Guide to Finding Beauty in Everyday and Family Life. By Sarah Wilkerson.
I remember vividly still when this book came out and how excited I was to read it. Photography books, however, are so expensive compared to other books, therefore not so easily for thrifty lil me to spend my money on. This one retails for $21, which is an average price for comparable books. And when you factor in ALL the work involved and all the information you’ll learn and inspiration you’ll get from this book, it is a bargain. It comes in a thick, sturdy hardcover format. If I had a coffee table (and no toddlers) I’d even consider making it a coffee table book.
The book consists of inspiring photos divided into categories of: Natural Light, Composition, Storytelling, Fine Art, Black & White, and Low Light. It’s NOT a step-by-step book to teach beginner photographers how to take photos. It’s more of an inspirational guide for photographers that have already mastered basic photography skills.
I’ve been on such an uncreative “funk” that I can’t seem to get out of. But as I read this book, I actually made myself a checklist of new images I wanted to seek out and make based on the ideas listed. It’s a very easy read – I flipped through it first during downtime while we were having a garage sale, and second – I finished it while babysitting and the kids were all playing on their own.
I’m very thankful for my copy that I received from Blogging For Books for an honest review. The book helped inspire my photography work that has been lacking lately.
I’d give it 4/5 stars due to the fact that I was expecting more of a workbook and while it is an amazing book, I felt it is lacking the truly deep educational information I was hoping to get out of it. That being said, I still fully recommend it to photographers that are already familiar with photography and camera basics.
This book is available at ClickinMoms Store, Penguin Random House (publisher), Amazon, and other bookstores.
